7 Tax Perks For Those Who Are Over 65 (Based on 2025–2026 Regulations)

2. Additional Standard Deduction for Seniors

If you’re 65 or older, you automatically qualify for a higher standard deduction, which reduces your taxable income without needing to itemize.

For 2025:

  • +$2,000 (single filers)
  • +$1,600 per spouse (married couples)

This is on top of the regular standard deduction, meaning seniors can shield more income from taxes.

Example: A married couple over 65 could deduct:

  • Base standard deduction
  • PLUS senior additions
  • PLUS the new $12,000 bonus deduction

Result: Tens of thousands in income potentially not taxed at all
