The Smart Move: See Your Eye Doctor Before You Go to the DMV
Here’s the advice every senior driver should hear: don’t wait for the DMV to find a problem.
Schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your optometrist 60 to 90 days before your license renewal date.
This gives you time to:
- Update your prescription if it’s changed
- Discuss any early-stage conditions like cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration
- Get your doctor to complete the required DMV vision form, which you can then bring directly to the DMV — bypassing the in-house screening entirely in many states
- Fix issues before they become a problem at the counter
In California, for example, you can choose to have your exam done by an outside ophthalmologist or optometrist within six months of your renewal request, instead of relying on the DMV’s own screening. Your doctor completes the form, you bring it in, and the DMV accepts it as your vision verification.
This is a much less stressful route for many older drivers.
