Secret Handshakes: Create a handshake only you and your grandchild know. It might be hand claps, snaps, or a dancing motion!
Code words: Create words only you and your partner can understand. A word like “I love you” or “Let’s go for ice cream” might make your conversation exciting.
Special Nicknames: Make up nicknames for each other to use exclusively together. These might be internal jokes, shared experiences, or anything else significant to your partnership.
A set number of winks to convey. Two winks for “yes,” one for “no,” etc.

3-6 Year Olds:

Enjoying a yearly ‘Adventure Day’

Honestly, this was one of the best grandparent tips I’ve received since retirement. Start a ‘Grand Adventure Day’ habit with your grandchild for lifelong memories. Set aside a day for adventure and exploration when the rules don’t apply and the emphasis is on pleasure, discovery, and togetherness.

Imagine picking a day to go on an adventure with your grandchild each year. It may be a neighborhood museum, nature trek, zoo, or city day excursion. The beauty of this custom is that it develops with your grandchild. Teenagers may go kayaking or to concerts after visiting to the playground as toddlers.

For example, I have a memory as fresh now as it was decades ago. I was seven when my grandma announced our first ‘Grand Adventure Day.’ I was transported to another dimension when she brought me to a scientific museum. We saw every exhibit, saw a planetarium show, and had lunch at the museum café, which a seven-year-old thought was fancy. That day of discovery and mutual delight shaped my passion of learning and adventure.

As kids age, their ‘Grand Adventure Day’ selections will reflect their evolving interests, revealing who they are becoming. This ritual bonds you and provides memories you’ll cherish.

Here are a few great places to get started:

Local Zoos or Animal Sanctuaries: Great sites to learn about animals and their environments. Seeing various creatures up close is instructive and exciting.
Science and Children’s Museums: These hands-on museums educate and entertain kids and adults. Special displays for various ages are common.
Planetariums and observatories: These give a look at stars and planets and typically include kid-friendly programs.
Hikes or nature walks in national parks are great ways to spend the day if you both like the outdoors. You may study animals, vegetation, and geology.
Art workshops or craft centers: Try ceramics, painting, or creating at an art workshop or craft center for a more creative experience.
Theme parks and adventure centers provide exhilarating rides and entertainment. Choose all-ages parks for optimum pleasure.

Start a cooking tradition

Gourmet activities with your grandchild are about blending tastes and memories, not simply cooking or baking. You may connect over stirring a pot or measuring ingredients and pass along family recipes or discover new ones.

This activity is about sharing skills, traditions, and relationships, not simply cooking. It’s about laughing when something goes wrong, seeing your grandchild’s joy when they taste their creation and the story behind each dish.
